End of Term Grading: 11th June, Friday

This term's grading will take place on 11th June, Friday in the Dance Studio (Sports Centre) from 6.15pm till 8.15pm.

Please make sure that you are not late to the grading session.

Bank Holiday Monday, 31st May - Training Session Cancelled

Due to this Monday (31st May) being a Bank Holiday, we are unable to use Darwin Missing Link for our training so the training on this Monday only will not take place.

The rest of the training sessions will take place as usual.

Summer Term 2010 Training Times

The training times and the venues for the final term of 2010 are as follows:

Monday: 6.00-8.00pm Darwin Missing Link
Wednesday: 6.20-8.20pm Squash Courts (Sports Centre - ask at reception for the court number)
Friday: 6.15-8.15pm Dance Studio (Sports Centre)

All the sessions are for everyone from all levels.

Towards the end of the term, on 14th June, Monday, a grading session will take place. Those who want to be graded are required to attend as many sessions as they can (this is usually 20 sessions/40 hours of training since the last grading).

Committee Handover

The committee handover for the academic year 2010/11 took place last week, on 5th May. The new committee is as follows:

What we do.

The University of Kent Karate Club is situated in Canterbury and is very well established; we’ve been around longer than any other martial arts club on campus with a long history of success at the national university championships. The teaching is generally fairly relaxed but disciplined, the teachers all very approachable. We also have a varied curriculum and full weekly training schedule.

Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art; literally meaning ‘empty hand’ it was first created as unarmed defence against armed opponents. It uses powerful strikes designed to disable and incapacitate potential antagonists and as such is a practical skill to know. It provides both mental and physical conditioning, keeps you fit and works to teach useful self-defence.

We are a multi-discipline club, although we’re based in dentokan shorin ryu style karate we have a number of senseis trained in various styles. Beginners are welcome at any point in the year however it’s advisable to join closer to the beginning of a term to benefit the most.

We grade twice over the year towards the end of each term to recognise improvement made and to add a bit more variety we also frequently hold lessons dedicated to ju-jitsu style self defence and basic weapons training.

We cater for competitive members, we normally enter the annual ‘BUCS’ university competition, and this year we hope to get involved in a few more. Our social calendar is usually packed full of exciting events and this year is set to be no different.
